Since 1877, Medicinska Föreningen has been driven forward by committed members – students and alumni of Karolinska Institutet. Do you want to deepen your involvement in the student union’s work while gaining valuable experience for the future? Do you feel you have knowledge and skills to contribute to the union’s activities and help shape its development?

It’s time to nominate and run for leadership positions within Medicinska Föreningen, as well as student representative positions for 2026! The General Assembly (Fullmäktige, FuM) will hold its first meeting on November 22. At this meeting, elected officials and central student representatives for 2026 will be chosen.

President

The President of Medicinska Föreningen has the primary responsibilities of representing the association and speaking on its behalf, as well as leading the work of the board. In practice, this means being the student union’s public face, both in interactions with Karolinska Institutet (KI) and with other student unions, associations, and industry. The President represents the students in regular contact with KI’s leadership and various central groups.

The President leads MF’s board meetings, prepares materials for these meetings, and presents the board’s proposals at the General Assembly. The President is also a member of all committees and participates in their work to varying degrees. The role may also include personnel responsibilities.

The President position is full-time and compensated, making it unsuitable to study or hold another job simultaneously. The President is supported by one to three Vice Presidents, with whom they collaborate closely throughout the year.

Vice president

The Vice President acts as the deputy to the President and has largely the same responsibilities as the President (see above). The Vice President position can be held by one to three people, and the specific tasks depend on the number of Vice Presidents elected. If more than one person is elected, the General Assembly decides the order in which they will act in place of the President.

Usually, one person is elected as a full-time Vice President, with responsibilities shared equally between the President and Vice President. When compensated full-time, it is not suitable to study or hold another job simultaneously.

Secretary

The Secretary is a member of the board and takes minutes at all board meetings. The Secretary also records minutes at the General Assembly meetings. This position is compensated with a symbolic honorarium.

Board members

The Board leads Medicinska Föreningen and is the student union’s highest executive body. As a board member, you participate in decision-making on strategic issues, support committees and sections, and have specific areas of responsibility or take part in working groups with particular focus within the board. The board is responsible for implementing the decisions of both the General Assembly and the board. This position is compensated with a symbolic honorarium.

Speaker

The Speaker leads the meetings of the General Assembly and is responsible for sending out notices and meeting documents, as well as ensuring that the rules of procedure are followed. This position requires extensive experience with the General Assembly and a strong understanding of Medicinska Föreningen’s statutes, regulations, and organization.

Vice Speaker

The Deputy Speaker acts as the deputy to the Speaker and assists the Speaker in their duties. Together, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Secretary make up the presidium of the General Assembly.

Operations auditors and substitutes

The Auditors are responsible for reviewing Medicinska Föreningen’s activities to ensure that the statutes have been followed, that the organization is developing appropriately, and that decisions have been made correctly. This involves going through all minutes produced during the year and providing an assessment of how well the association’s bodies have fulfilled their duties.

Standard Bearer

The Standard Bearer is an honorary position within Medicinska Föreningen. The Standard Bearer is responsible for caring for the association’s standard, banners, and other heraldic items. They ensure that important ceremonial days for the association are observed and act as toastmaster at Amphiox Gasques and balls, with MF covering the event ticket in these cases.

The Standard Bearer promotes continuity in MF’s external representation and maintains contacts with the student union’s friends and benefactors, while also upholding proper etiquette among elected representatives. The Standard Bearer represents the union with its standard and banners at events such as the Nobel Banquet and SSCO celebrations on Walpurgis Night. They also lead the Ceremony Committee and assist the board and presidium in other representative contexts.

Hostess

The Hostess is an honorary position. Together with the Host, the Hostess carries out and embodies Medicinska Föreningen’s hospitality at official events to which MF invites guests. The host pair sends personal invitations to those invited to MF’s sittings and parties, compiles RSVPs for the Program Committee, and arranges seating at the sittings. During events, the host pair welcomes guests, manages MF’s guestbook, answers questions, and ensures that guests have an enjoyable experience.

Grave Caretaker

The Grave Caretaker is responsible for maintaining Medicinska Föreningen’s grave site at Norra begravningsplatsen in Solna and ensuring that the agreement regarding the care of Prosector Axel Westermark’s grave is followed. The role also includes organizing the torch procession to the grave site and the lighting ceremony on All Souls’ Day, which falls on the Sunday after All Saints’ Day.

Chair of the Education Council (UrO)

The Chair of the Education Council (UrO) works together with the Presidium to develop, coordinate, and strengthen MF’s student representation. As UrO, you will have the opportunity to work strategically on educational issues important to all students at KI, build contacts, and gain valuable experience for your future career!

You lead the Education Council (UR), where our sections meet to discuss cross-program educational matters, and you nominate student representatives who are then elected by the Board.

Nominating Commission – chair, secretary and members

The Nomination Committee prepares elections for leadership positions and student representative positions to be elected by the General Assembly. This includes announcing the positions, collecting candidacies, and presenting nominations to the General Assembly for who should be elected. Before making proposals, the Nomination Committee, to the extent possible, ensures that the nominees meet the requirements for the respective position, for example by conducting interviews with candidates for central leadership positions.

Equal Treatment Commission – chair, vice chair, secretary, members

The Equality Committee (LBN) works to ensure equal conditions for all students, regardless of gender, transgender identity or expression, age, ethnic background, religion or other belief, sexual orientation, or disability. LBN addresses these issues both within the student union and in relation to the university.

The Chair of the Equality Committee leads the work on equality by acting as the committee’s primary representative, calling meetings, and sending out meeting materials. The Vice Chair assists the Chair and acts as Chair in their absence. The Secretary takes minutes at the committee’s meetings.

Scholarship Committee – Chair and Members

The Scholarship Committee is responsible for preparing cases regarding the awarding of scholarships for the Board to decide on. This means that the committee proposes when the Board should announce scholarships from the foundations managed by MF, reviews all submitted applications, and recommends to the Board who should receive the scholarships.

Auditors and substitutes for the foundations managed by MF

The Auditors are responsible for reviewing the management of the foundations administered by Medicinska Föreningen and ensuring that, during the fiscal year, laws, statutes, and regulations have been correctly followed. Medicinska Föreningen manages the following foundations:

  • The Folke Sjöqvist 50-Year Fund and Ulla Lindholm Scholarship Fund

  • Medicinska Föreningen’s Joint Foundation for Studies

  • Medicinska Föreningen’s Joint Foundation for Study Trips

  • The J. Åkerman, B. Pernow, and C.G. Bernhard Foundation

Number of positions: 1 Auditor and 1 Deputy Auditor per foundation (you may, of course, apply for the position of Auditor or Deputy for all foundations)

    Make sure to submit your candidacies and nominations by Wednesday, November 4 via the form on the page!

    After this, the Nomination Committee will review all submitted candidacies and nominations and hold interviews for the major positions. The Committee will then compile its nominations and send them to the General Assembly (FuM).

    You will be contacted by the Nomination Committee with more information regarding whether you have been nominated for a position, as well as details about the FuM meeting where the leadership positions will be elected.

    Union council meeting

    On Saturday, November 20 at 11:00, the General Assembly (FuM) will hold its constitutive meeting. At this meeting, the leadership positions will be elected.

    The meeting will take place digitally, and the Nomination Committee will send a link with more information to all applicants. If you have been nominated for a position, you will be invited to participate and introduce yourself.

    Even if you have not been nominated by the Nomination Committee, you can still attend the meeting and have the opportunity to present yourself and be elected if FuM decides to allow open nominations.
