Välkomna till Karolinska Institutet och Medicinska föreningen! Nedan finner du historia, traditioner och fullständig guide för att överleva din tid på Medicinska föreningen.

Introduction of MF

Medicinska Föreningen (MF) was founded by the students of Karolinska Institutet (KI) in 1877, making us the oldest student association in Stockholm. MF works daily to make sure that your education at KI is being kept at the highest possible quality and that we represent the students in several decision-making bodies within KI. We are also a place for two other important aspects of student life: Social activities and student support. As a member of MF, you can turn to us with questions about your study situation, student life or problems with your education. This is taken care of by the many representatives and associations within the union.

Karolinska Institutet has two campuses – one in Solna and one in Flemingsberg. Regardless of whether you study at Solna or Flemingsberg campus, you are welcome to Medicinska Föreningen’s union house in Solna or our premises in Flemingberg. Most of MF’s activities are arranged in Solna since this is where we have our student union house “Kårhuset”. This is also where we host all our balls, parties and popular Friday Pubs. We as a student union host many of these events that are aimed at bringing good networking and fun to your life here at KI.

Getting involved in the student union is the best way to meet new friends and make sure that your time at KI isn’t only about studying! Whatever you like, there is something for you here, and if we don’t have it – contact us and we’ll help you start it up!

In short, the purpose of Medicinska Föreningen (MF) is to unite the students of Karolinska Institutet (KI), to promote the studies of medical sciences, to look after the members’ common interests and to generate and maintain good friendships among the members. As a student union, MF is responsible for monitoring and participating in the development of the education and study environment at KI. Together we make our time at KI one of the most life-defining periods of our lives. Welcome to KI and welcome to Medicinska Föreningen (MF), your student house.

It took a long time before the medical students in Stockholm had their association, but when the Karolinska Institute (KI) received a complete medical education in the 1870s, the Association of Medicinska föreningen (The medical association) was founded on April 21, 1877, at Hotel Fenix and had 83 members at its inception.

The original 83 members grew to around 5,000 members by the end of the 1990s when KI took more and more educational programs under its wing, and some of these became part of MF (Medicinska Föreningen). In 1998, the Health College in Stockholm merged with the Karolinska Institute, which then acquired several healthcare programs. In 2001, the Health Sciences Association, a student union comprising these healthcare programs, merged with MF, thereby increasing MF’s membership to around 7,000 and nearly 20 educational programs. In 2010, the Physiotherapy Student Union in Stockholm joined MF, making MF the student union for KI’s physiotherapy students.

An important function of MF from the beginning was to foster greater cohesion among students, particularly among those from different years and programs. Balls and parties have always been organized, and of course, educational matters have played a central role in the association. Theatrical performances and music have also long held a significant place within the association.

A question that has persisted over time is that of premises. In the early years, the association changed locations frequently, but in 1913, it moved permanently to Norr Mälarstrand 12 and remained there until 1954. At that point, MF moved with the Karolinska Institute to its new campus in the Norrbacka area and began renting its student union building from the Royal Board of Buildings. In 1983, students were replaced by books as the Institute’s library had outgrown its space, and our beloved auditorium and dining hall were taken over by eager readers. In return, the association was promised the opportunity to purchase the remaining part of the student union building and, with the help of donations and its funds, build an auditorium connected to it. In May 1985, a new wing of the student union building was ready for inauguration. The remaining part of the old student union building and the new extension has been owned and managed since then by the Medical Association’s Student Union Building Foundation, which rents out the entire building to the association.

MF structure

We understand that the MF structure can be hard to understand in the beginning. Here is our attempt to describe it. If you have any more questions, please contact [email protected] and we will try to clear anything up.

FuM is the highest decision-making body of the Medical Association. FuM is elected annually in the Student Union Election in October and consists of members appointed by the Medical Association’s members, as well as representatives from the sections. FuM makes significant operational decisions, such as approving the operational plan, budget, governing documents, and appointing trust positions. The FuM election is taking place every autumn and all MF members are welcome to vote for representatives to be a part of FuM.

The Board is the highest executive body of the Medical Association. The Board is appointed by the Representative Body (FuM) and includes Medicinska Föreningens President, Vice President, Secretary, and other board members (up to 10 people). The Board works to implement FuM’s decisions in practice and to continuously improve and streamline the student union’s activities. The Board also makes decisions regarding personnel matters, such as hiring and salaries.

The Medical Association has a staff of seven employees. The Representative Body decides on the establishment of positions, and the Board makes decisions about hiring salaries and other personnel matters. The Board appoints a personnel manager within the Administrative Committee (Förvaltingsutskotett FU) that will be the chief of the employees. Other employees within MF are the Administrating Venue Manager (lokal ansvarig) who makes sure that the MF premises are taken care of, Administrating Member Manager (Medlemsansvarig) who works in the reception and helps you with your membership, Treasurer (Skattis) who controls the economy, the Student and Doctoral Representative that helps you with all your questions about your education and the Project Manager for the Future Student Union Building that works towards a new union house.

The Medical Association’s Student Union Building Foundation (KHS) was established in 1983 and its purpose is to promote studies, research, sports, social, and cultural activities. The Foundation owns, manages, and maintains the Medical Association’s Student Union Building on the Solna campus and is responsible for its renovations and expansions.

The Future Student Union Building Project is a project run by the Student Union Building Foundation. The Student Union Building Foundation’s board consists of representatives from KI and MF. Future Student Union Building (FKH) is owned by the Student Union Building Foundation and is a project commissioned by FuM to carry out a comprehensive renovation of the Student Union Building at Nobels väg 10 in Solna. The Board of MF is responsible for defining the priorities and goals of the project in dialogue with KHS.

An intense fundraising campaign is now underway to gather funds to renovate floors, walls and ceilings and implement more modern technology that is required for today’s activities. With an improved and well-equipped union house, we will be able to offer an inspiring environment where students, researchers, teachers and alumni can meet at the heart of Campus Solna.

The committees are the association’s driving force and are selected by the Board to serve as its extended arm within their respective areas of operation. For example, they organize events, pub activities, receptions, sports events, and budget work, to name a few. MF’s different committees are

  • Förvaltingsutskottet (FU) “Administrative Committee”

Flix is Medicinska Föreningens female skit group that puts up an interactive fall show with heart, fear, rhyme and reason to brighten the November slumber in KI:s corridors. On stage, we can see traditionally fictional characters with a male lead. The skit group performances are something you can not miss! The performance is done in Swedish.

  • Valborg at Skansen

The tradition of celebrating Valborg came to Sweden from Germany as far back as the Middle Ages. Come and celebrate Valborg with us at Skansen, Stockholms’ only zoo with only Nordic animals. Valborg is celebrated every year on 30 April, when we sing in the spring and clear away the winter by gathering around a big fire. During this day, Stockholm students will perform by singing and walking with the student union banner. On April 30th, University students have free entry into the park. Show a valid student ID at the main entrance. The event is held in Swedish.

  • Valborgspubrundan

All student pubs in Stockholm are open on the same day! Go around Stockholm and enjoy all the different pubs with your friends and try to get as many patches as you can! Valborgspubrundan is hosted during the Valborg week around April 30th.

  • Lucia ball hosted by PrU on the 13th of December

The Lucia Ball is the most solemn event held at Medicinska Föreningen and is arranged annually on the 13th of December by the Programme Committee. The 13th of December is also the date that King Karl XIII founded Karolinska Institutet in 1810 which makes it an even more solemn evening, some years even the Nobel Prize Laureates in Physiology or Medicine come and celebrate this evening with us! The evening offers a three-course dinner and entertainment. In addition, some of Medicinska Föreningen’s highest medals of honour are awarded during the evening. The dinner is followed by a classical waltz. The event is held in English.

  • SNNC

Students’ Nobel NightCap, SNNC, is the continuation of the Nobel Banquet on 10 December. It is arranged entirely by university students and is run on a purely voluntary basis. Since its start in 1978, the party has grown and is today an established part of Nobel Week, and something that most of the guests at the Nobel Banquet visit. Here, the Nobel laureates and their guests are given a chance to relax from the constant press during Nobel Week and at the same time the students get an opportunity to take part in the celebration, as well as the legacy of Alfred Nobel. Unlike the banquet, no journalists are invited, and photography is prohibited. The four student unions in Stockholm; Stockholm University’s student union, the University of Technology’s student union, the Medical Association and the School of Business’s student union, take turns arranging Students’ Nobel NightCap. Thus, each university gets the chance to arrange the event every four years.

  • The song book:

The first Medicinska Föreningen song book was released in 1935. Since then new versions have been released every few decades. The latest edition, the fifth edition of the Medicinska Föreningen song book, was released in 2016. The song book holds information about various aspects of MF and its traditions. Apart from that it has wonderful songs that are sung during formal events like at the Amphiox sitting. One fun tradition with the song book is that it gets passed on to others during a sitting to write messages and quotes for the holder of the book.

As a student at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, you are part of a lively academic community that prioritizes both study and personal growth through MF. Understanding your rights and responsibilities as a university student is critical to getting the most out of your educational experience. This quick summary will give you an idea of the rights you will have and the duties you will have throughout your stay at Karolinska Institute. By becoming acquainted with these concepts, you will be better able to manage your academic path and contribute meaningfully to the university community.

All the rules and regulations of the institution are mandated within the framework of Sweden’s legislation within which the following takes precedence

  1. The Work environment act
  2. The Swedish Higher Education Act
  3. The Swedish Higher Education Ordinance Act
  4. The Swedish Discrimination act

The most important ones include,

Discrimination and Harassment: Karolinska Institute tries to ensure a discrimination and harassment-free environment, upholding the right of every student to equitable treatment and respect. At KI these matters are taken as a serious concern with a zero-tolerance policy.

Equal Opportunities: At Karolinska, all students are provided equal opportunities for learning and personal development, fostering an inclusive educational journey.

Injuries and Accidents: Your safety matters – Karolinska is committed to safeguarding students and minimizing risks of injuries or accidents within its premises. It is an obligation that all students report incidents of concern or accidents on the incident report page here. Remember that you can also file complaints anonymously. If you see something, say something.

Cheating and Plagiarism: Upholding academic integrity, Karolinska strictly prohibits cheating and plagiarism, with students duty-bound to maintain honesty and uphold the university’s standards. Please read the policy against zero tolerance on plagiarism and cheating carefully on the website.

Student Influence: The students shall have the right to exert influence over their education at the universities, and shall work to ensure that the students take an active part in the work to further develop their education. This is usually done through the various representations at the programme level, department level and centrally.

These are some of the key highlights, however, there is other important information as well. Click on the tiles or visit the home page on student rights to know more about your rights and responsibilities. In case of concerns or help reach out to the Student Safety Network or the Student Ombuds.

Student Safety

A university’s physical and psychological environment has a major impact on its students’ well-being, learning, and overall experience. Universities have a critical role in providing an environment favourable to holistic growth, from maintaining safe infrastructure and sanitary facilities to cultivating a supportive culture. However, difficulties ranging from maintenance issues to psychological pressures might occur, needing a responsive and representative structure to address student concerns.

This is where many of the MF’s protective measures come into place. They include

  1. The Student Ombudsman: They are an independent office for all the students and doctoral students, employed by the student unions, offering a safe space for students to address all and any type of concerns. If you encounter unfair treatment within KI or face issues with peers or staff, you can seek assistance here. This office represents all students, advocating not only for individual cases but also suggesting improvements to student-affecting procedures centrally. Anonymity is respected for those approaching the ombudsperson at all levels. They are also mandated by the Work Environment Act and are sworn to secrecy.
  1. Student Safety Network:  The Head Student Safety Representative (HSSO) and the Student Safety Representatives (SSO) are students and PhD candidates who serve as a critical link between the student body and the management. They are tasked with properly articulating the viewpoints and concerns of the students regarding the physical and psychological environment. They are mandated in place by the Swedish Work Environment Act.
  1. Equal Treatment Committee (ETC): The Equal Treatment Commission (ETC/LBN) collaborates with the university and student union to ensure equal opportunities for all students, regardless of characteristics like gender, identity, age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. Their mission is to create an inclusive atmosphere within Karolinska Institutet and Medicinska Föreningen where every student feels safe and welcomed. They conduct awareness initiatives, drive change, and support diversity through events, policy advocacy, and accessibility awareness. This is an association within MF.
  1. The University Chaplaincy Services

The University Chaplaincy is an independent organisation and  offers a welcoming space for individuals to forge connections, engage in meaningful discussions about life, and explore their spiritual needs. The Chaplaincy’s core mission revolves around creating an inclusive community where all members are embraced, acknowledged, and cherished for their individuality. With a firm commitment to human rights, Chaplaincy advocates for the right to live authentically in terms of sexual orientation and gender identity. This belief underscores their stance on equality, promoting the inherent value of every individual before both God and fellow human beings, regardless of factors like gender, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnicity.

The Chaplaincy encourages individuals to connect, participate in activities, and seek support from their compassionate team. They offer various forms of support including counselling services. Visit their website to know more.

Please visit each of the measures and their websites hyperlinked as titles above or the contact information at the end of this document for more information.

Health Care in Sweden

Renowned for its comprehensive and inclusive approach, Sweden’s healthcare system is built on universal coverage, fairness, and accessibility. This also extends to international students studying in Stockholm, granting them equal access to quality healthcare services. It is essential for all international students in securing comprehensive health insurance coverage that aligns with Sweden’s standards from either their home country or newly taken here in Sweden. Though it is not mandatory, it is advisable to get additional insurance.

To access healthcare services, registering with the Swedish Tax Agency for a personal identity number (personnummer) is typically required in most cases. Please note that in cases where a Swedish Personal Number isn’t available, or if you are not eligible for one specific regulation apply, and the 1177 website offers more information for the same.

It is also essential to remember that your FAS and FAS plus insurance is only applicable for EMERGENCY situations and for dental coverages. It DOES NOT cover primary health care visits or medications. Please read the documentation and regulations for FAS and FAS plus insurance carefully as to what and what does not apply.

If you are from the EU/EEA and Switzerland you are entitled to certain care rights and costs while if you come from a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you must pay the full cost of medical care in most cases. Conditions apply, please refer to the 1177 website

If you are a student and you become registered in Sweden, you are entitled to medical care subject to the same terms and conditions as other people who are residents in the country. To become registered in the country, you must study for more than one year. It is not sufficient to study for two terms. You will need to be registered in the town or city where you live. To be registered you must visit a Swedish Tax Agency service office in person.

Please also note that dental care in Sweden is not covered by the public healthcare system for adults, except for emergency treatments. The dental system is taken care of by Folktandvård and private dental clinics are available where you can receive dental examinations, cleanings, and various dental treatments. Private dental care involves costs, so it’s advisable to have dental insurance or check if your student insurance covers dental care.

If you do not understand Swedish, you are entitled to an interpreter when you visit a healthcare facility. When you make an appointment, tell the staff that you require an interpreter. The staff will then arrange for an interpreter to be present during your visit. This service is free of charge.

There are specific conditions that vary for international students from different parts of the world, please refer to the 1177 website on this.

The health care system can quickly be summarised into the following concepts, the definitions and scope are subject to change at times,  please refer to the 1177 website for more information that is well-updated.

1 1177: 1177 is a healthcare information service in Sweden, offering a central resource for medical advice, information about health services, and guidance on various health-related topics to the public. It serves as a first point of contact for various health concerns. Some of them do not work on weekends to which, please refer to a Narakut
  2. Närakut (Urgent Care): Närakut refers to urgent care facilities that provide immediate medical attention for non-life-threatening conditions when a regular doctor might not be available. It bridges the gap between routine care and emergency departments.
  3. Akuten (Emergency Department): Akuten is an emergency department in Swedish hospitals where critical and life-threatening medical situations are treated, including severe injuries and medical conditions requiring immediate attention.

Apart from that they also offer counselling services with a psychologist or a clinical nurse to get help and be informed of your health. You can schedule an appointment for individual support or get advice by phone. They also offer several group activities. All visits and activities are free of charge.

Incident Reporting

You as a student are encouraged to report incidents to ensure a safe and encouraging campus. This also includes all work-related illness and occurrences: accidents, near-miss incidents and violations that could, or does result in injury and ill health should be reported in the IA system. Prevention is the guiding principle for occupational safety and health (OSH). And by reporting incidents we all can contribute to that principle.

Please report any incidents of accidents, violence, discrimination or others at https://education.ki.se/incident-if-something-has-happened

Read all instructions carefully while filling the form, this can also be done anonymously

If you find it difficult to report it alone or you need more information and support, you can always reach out to the Student Ombuds or the Student Safety Representatives. They can help and guide you to the right resources. All the information and proceedings are bound to confidentiality.
