Margarida Bettencourt

Master’s in Health Economics, Policy and Management T1

Varför vill du var med i FuM: I wish to join the Union Council (FuM) because I believe student representation is both a duty and a privilege. FuM, as the highest decision-making body of Medicinska Föreningen (MF), sets activity plans, budgets and bylaws and elects key positions.

I am committed to ensuring that MF’s mission is fulfilled, supporting education, defending students’ rights and fostering equality and social engagement. I want to listen to students across all Sections and Associations, understand their concerns and transform them into well-founded, representative positions.

Drawing on my experience chairing assemblies and safeguarding democratic procedures, I aim to help FuM uphold and develop statutes and ensure that committees, commissions and employees can work effectively. Joining FuM means using my time at Karolinska Institutet to strengthen democratic participation and make sure every student group can thrive.

Erfarenheter: At Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon), I was elected by my peers as Student Member of the School Assembly Board, co-conducting meetings of a 60-member body (30 professors, 20 students, 10 staff). I ensured debates followed the statutes, updated and adapted the Assembly’s regulations and shaped agendas so that issues important to the whole community were addressed.

Alongside this, as Vice-President for External Affairs of AEIST, I represented over 12 000 students in national higher-education forums, turning positions approved in student general assemblies into concrete policy advocacy.

I also served as Director of Communication & Marketing Office, School Assembly member, Pedagogical Council member and Programme Representative, working on curriculum reform, quality assurance and student-rights protection.

These roles honed skills in meeting facilitation, policy and regulation development, negotiation and democratic decision-making, directly relevant to FuM’s responsibility for strategic governance, budgets and statutes.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I want to be a part of FuM because I want to take part in shaping the major decisions that affect MF and all students at KI. I am passionate about making a difference and especially for the students at KI. For me, it is important that students’ voices are heard and that MF continues to strengthen the community and influence at KI. As a member of FuM, I plan to contribute to the development of MF’s budget and long-term strategy in a way that benefit all students and ensure that our voices are heard.

Erfarenheter: I have been actively involved in MF through several different roles. Within Läkarsektionen, I have attended section meetings and I have furthermore also participated in kursråd. As Thalamus in the Communications Committee, I contributed to student engagement and supported MF’s outreach. As PR in Nallesjukhuset, I helped promoting activities that connects KI students with the community. As Swedish teacher for Language@ki, I have supported international students in their integration. Through these experiences, I gained insight into how to represent student perspectives and working to improve the education at Ki. These experiences have also given me a broad understanding of how MF works and this is why I think I would be a good fit for student representation, communication and collaboration in FuM.

Bachelor’s program in Biomedicine T3

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: Being a FuM representative entails taking on a great responsibility; overseeing the activity of the union board, presidium and all other bodies of MF. Having been active as the treasurer of Biomedicinska Utbildningssektionen, I have a deep understanding of the financial and administrative workings of the student union. I am looking to continue my involvement in the section too and want to strengthen communication between FuM and all union bodies. I have, additionally, been a part of the previous council in FuM and am looking to bring valuable perspective and context to the next FuM to ensure the upholding of good practices and the betterment of the student union.

Erfarenheter: During my time at KI, I have involved myself with MF on various levels. For one year, I have served as the treasurer of BUS, Biomedicinska Utbildningssektionen (the biomedical education section) at MF. This role has allowed me to deepen my understanding of the financial workings of the union through rigorous communication, both with the section board as well as the presidium and treasurer of MF. I have also been involved with student representation at KI as the class representative for my year of bachelors students in biomedicine, forwarding the thoughts of my peers to improve the courses of our program. Perhaps most importantly, however, I was a council member of the previous FuM. This gives me crucial context and insight into the student union which is essential in making the necessary decisions within the council to ensure a functioning student union.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I want to be a part of FuM because I’m passionate about student representation and ensuring that the voices of all KI students are heard in important decisions that shape our education and student life. As the highest decision-making body within MF, FuM plays a key role in defining the union’s strategic direction, and I want to contribute to making well-informed, inclusive, and forward-thinking decisions. My role as a student ambassador for KI not only allows me to represent my peers on campus but also give me valuable perspectives from outside the university, from students interested in studying at KI. This dual insight enables me to contribute to FuM with a broader understanding of how KI is perceived and how student life and education can be further improved to meet the needs of both current and future students.

Erfarenheter: I am an active member of Medicinska Föreningen and have participated in various student activities and meetings that have given me insight into MF’s structure and operations. Through my role as course council representative (kursrådsrepresentant) in the courses Basvetenskap 1 and 2 at the medical program, I have learned the importance of student representation in shaping our education. Beyond MF, I have gained leadership and teamwork experience as a board member in several student associations, including KirA (Student Society for Surgery and Anesthesia) and SKFL (Swedish Surgical Association for Medical Students), as well as serving as amanuens for KI’s Summer Research School for high school students. These experiences have strengthened my skills in planning, communication, critical thinking, and decision-making. I believe this background has prepared me well to contribute actively, responsibly, and constructively to discussions and decisions within FuM.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I believe in the importance of representing students’ interests and contributing to an improved study environment. Being part of the council gives me the opportunity to influence decisions that directly affect us, both academically and socially. I am passionate about creating an inclusive atmosphere where all students feel welcomed and can be a part of decisions about their own education and student life. I also want to continue the work we had started last year and support the new board with my knowledge and experiences. One of my goals is bridging the gap between students and ensuring that every student feels included. I believe that my motivation and passion for MF will be a great help to drive positive change, contribute to our work and ensure that students’ voices are heard.

Erfarenheter: I have been a board member for FUM for the past two years which made me have a great understanding of the challenges we have and I have the motivation to meet them together with the board and students. During these years I had various interactions with different associations within MF, for example PRU, läkarintrot, LÄSK, Med SM, Festis and others. Some for longer periods and others for shorter. I have also worked as HA for an extended time and served as a member of the Infrastructure Committee. I’ve also served on several boards in the past. I believe that my experiences, knowledge and passion for MF will really help drive positive change and contribute to our work. I also have a great understanding of administrative tasks, budgeting, and practical work.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: During the introductory week, I was truly inspired by the impactful work FuM have accomplished and how actively they contribute to student initiatives at KI. It reminded me of my previous experiences leading student councils and advocacy groups, where I worked to represent student voices and bring positive change. As a Global Health student and class representative, I am now continuing that passion for student representation and collaboration. I want to join FuM to contribute to its mission of fostering transparency, inclusivity, and meaningful engagement within the student community. This role would not only allow me to be part of initiatives that shape academic and social well-being but also help me grow as a leader, strengthening my ability to turn ideas into impact and make a lasting difference for all KI students.

Erfarenheter: As a newly appointed student representative for the Global Health master’s program, I am actively engaging with students and faculty to communicate academic concerns and promote collaboration. Alongside this, I bring several years of experience in healthcare research, student leadership, and project management, having led multi-institutional research projects and trained large data collection teams. These experiences have strengthened my analytical thinking, teamwork, and organizational abilities. Previously, I served as a University Ambassador and as Head of the Student Representative Council for five years during my previous degree, where I developed strong advocacy and coordination skills. My background in health sciences and policy engagement enables me to bring an evidence-based and empathetic approach to FuM’s work, contributing to student representation and organizational improvement.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I would like to be a part of FUM because I believe that student influence is something of the utmost importance, and I want to be able to make a difference in the everyday life for students at KI. I believe that creating an open and welcoming environment for all students is something central and I want to work with MF to ensure that such an environment is accessible to all students. Another reason that I want to be a part of FUM is to ensure that MF develops a strategic plan that includes both student social activities as well as caring for the students welfare when it comes to their studies.

Erfarenheter: I have previous and current experience in student social activities as being a part of PrU (and its counterpart at THS) as well as being part of the reception at KTH. I have also been a representative for my term here at KI which has given me an insight into the student representative part of the educational influence.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I want to join FuM because I believe students should have a stronger voice in shaping both the union’s direction and the overall experience at KI. FuM is where meaningful decisions are made, and I want to contribute to a culture built on openness, transparency, and collaboration.

As a third-semester medical student, I’ve gained a clear understanding of how our education functions in practice and how high-level decisions affect our daily studies. I want to help bridge that gap between policy and student life, ensuring that discussions in FuM reflect our real experiences.

My goal is to strengthen communication within MF and make the union’s work more visible and accessible — so that more students feel informed, included, and motivated to take part in shaping our community.

Erfarenheter: I’m part of IFMSA through the project Nallesjukhuset, where I’m responsible for PR. My main tasks include sharing information about upcoming events, managing social media, and keeping communication running smoothly within the group. It’s been a fun and rewarding experience that’s taught me how to stay organised, work collaboratively, and make sure everyone feels included and informed.

In addition, I work as a tutor for dissection sessions (BV3), where I guide students through challenging material and help create a positive and supportive learning environment. This has strengthened my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills in a very hands-on way.

Through both experiences, I’ve learned the value of teamwork, structure, and clear communication — skills I’m eager to bring into the work within FuM.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I want to be able to affect the student body as a whole, for the better. As a nursing student, i would be able to speak for the Flemingsberg students and their needs. I’m an active member of PrU which caters to one end of the student experience, and this position would allow me to contribute to the other end.

Erfarenheter: My experience in PrU gives me an unique perspective of MF and the student body. I see the ramifications of FUM’s decisions and how they affect KI as a whole.

Because I’m in my last year as a student of KI I have had time to experience it through different administrations with different goals. This has given me a deeper understanding of the political landscape in of MF and how things *really* work.

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I would like to continue contributing to MF and it’s future through beeing in FuM by applying the knowledge and experience I have gained from serving as both vice president and president of the union.

Alma Andersson

Nursing T2

Varför vill du vara med i FuM: I want to be part of FuM to bring another voice from the nursing programme, work to improve the program and stand up for student rights. We are an underrepresented programme in MF and there are many ideas of how we could improve the quality of our education which I want to work on in an organized setting such as MF

Erfarenheter: I was a student representative for many years before starting university, and also represented youth in various scenarios such as the EU parliament and Almedalen. On top of that I have built transparent and democratic youth groups and coordinated campaigns working for climate justice. These experiences give me a good understanding of shaping change and holding the university to account for providing us a sustainable and just education preparing us students for the future.
